Job Description: 

Position Summary:
The position is a non-exempt full-time position responsible for the education of agriculture sciences, food science, seed saving and natural resources for visitors through the Moravian experience using a variety of techniques and educational themes. The Lead Educator oversees the site’s daily activities, coordinate programs with other sites and ensure the sites narrative meets the educational curriculum. Educators are responsible for creating a positive learning environment and providing exceptional customer service.

$12.95/per hour

Duties & Responsibilities: 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Customer Service & Engagement:
Engage with guests and staff in a warm and enthusiastic demeanor.
Respond to questions and provide pertinent information to visitors.
Help solve customer concerns.
Responsible for maintaining a professional and positive demeanor with visitors, Lead Assistant Educator and other members of staff.
Ensure all site visitors feel welcomed and experience a unique journey.

Education& Interpretation:
Remain abreast of continued advances in the agriculture and life sciences.
Assist with in creating and maintaining curriculum,
Assist in the development and planning of educational hands-on programs/projects/activities within given budget.
Oversee the Agricultural & Life Sciences Experience programs; including but not limited to special tours, student programs and other projects as needed.
Organize supplies and resources for the sites daily educational activities and events.
As needed participate in education, public engagement events in properly attired costume or apron.
Educate visitors on plant cultivation, propagation, breeding, and physiology . Duties include (but are not limited to): turning and preparing garden beds; sowing seeds and transplanting plants; weeding; harvesting; seed saving; fruit tree maintenance; grafting fruit trees; and operating cold frames.
Utilizing the harvested fruits & vegetables, maintain a weekly baking/cooking activity in a open hearth/wood stove and or free-standing brick bake oven as weather allows.
Reproduce, repair and maintain garden tools.
Participate in the preservation of food obtained from the garden in a manner that will allow the material to be used in cooking demonstrations throughout the year.
Deliver personalized instruction to each visitor by encouraging an interactive hands-on learning experience.

Safety & Security:
Responsible for building opening and closing/shutdown.
Maintain cleanliness and preservation of the assigned historic location.
Monitor visitors' activities in order to ensure compliance with regulations and safety practices
Provide security for the site, buildings, and exhibits.
Coordinate and handle the visitor crowds to ensure safe visit and walkthrough of buildings.
Daily upkeep of streetscape maintenance, interior cleanliness, and environmental (interior and exterior) engagement.
Responsible for reporting any maintenance and repairs to Supervisor and maintenance staff.
Adhere to agency safety policies and procedures.

Staffing:
Assist in the training of new Educators and volunteers.
As requested participate in the interview and selection process of new staff.
Participation in regular group update meetings with all other site teams.
Participation in regular organizational trainings and continuing education programs & readings.
Responsible for scheduling volunteers as it relates to the needs of their site.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS
Provide support to other educators throughout the district, as needed.
Required to cross-train for other education roles within the Historic District.
Adhere to all OSMG Policies and Procedures.
Participation in required organizational trainings and continuing education programs & readings.
Perform all other duties as assigned.

Education & Experience: 

High School diploma/GED required; Bachelor’s degree in agriculture, education or related field preferred.
Minimum of one-year supervisory experiences preferred.
Gardening or horticultural experience preferred.
At least two years of experience working in Education, Museum, Heritage Site or Theater required.
Multilingual abilities are a plus.
