Overview:
The Bowers School Farm, operated by Bloomfield Hills Schools, is a working farm that provides authentic, place-based learning experiences for schools and community groups. It is housed on 90 acres within Bloomfield Hills. The farm is open year-round for educational and community programs. The Bowers School Farm Camp provides children, ages 3 to 14, an opportunity to explore science and agriculture while creating lasting memories and friendships.

Position Summary:
As the Animal Science Group Leader, you will be responsible for leading a group of approximately 13-15 campers through daily farm activities focused heavily on animal science concepts. Animal Science Group Leaders must be physically able to work outdoors in various weather conditions, comfortable working with livestock and other farm animals, and be excited to work with children within an outdoor learning environment.

Duties & Responsibilities: 

Camp dates and Schedule:

Monday – Friday 8:30 am – 4:30 pm with optional extended day hours available.
Mandatory training dates are June 8 - June 19 and camp dates are June 22 – August 21 with a break from July 6 – July 10.
Camp staff must be available for these dates! **Exceptions will be made for pre-service and in-service educators.**

Primary Responsibilities:
- Engage campers in hands-on experiences on topics in the field of animal science including animal handling, behavior, and care.
- Maintaining a safe environment for campers while interacting with the livestock and other animals
- Facilitate project-based learning segments to enhance camper understanding of animal science topics
- Instructs students in the appropriate safety precautions and the safe operation and use of tools, machinery, and equipment.
- Provides different modalities of instruction to meet the varied educational needs of students.

Education & Experience: 

What are we looking for?
- Current college students and/or college graduates; background in animal science or veterinary science, or equivalent experience in farm animal care
- Comfortable working with livestock such as goats, sheep, and cows; horses, rabbits, llama, and poultry
- Experience working with children, especially 6th-8th grade
- Able to be physically active and on your feet for most of an 8-hour workday in various weather conditions
- Ability to lift up to 50 lbs
- A positive, can-do attitude and enthusiasm for the program and camp philosophy
- Passion for and experience in leading project-based learning experiments
