Overview:
The Bowers School Farm, operated by Bloomfield Hills Schools, is a working farm that provides authentic, place-based learning experiences for schools and community groups. It is housed on 90 acres within Bloomfield Hills. The farm is open year-round for educational and community programs. The Barnyard Buddies Farm Camps provide children, ages 3 to 5, an opportunity to explore nature, animals, and agriculture while creating lasting memories and friendships.
Position Summary:
As a Barnyard Buddies Group Leader, you will be responsible for leading a group of approximately 10 campers through their daily farm activities. These activities include daily animal interactions, such as milking the goats, gathering eggs, etc. and engaging campers to explore the world of agriculture, food systems, and the natural environment. Barnyard Buddies Group Leaders must be physically able to work outdoors in various weather conditions and be excited to work with pre-school age children within an outdoor learning environment.
Camp dates and Schedule:
Monday – Friday 8:30 am – 1:30 pm with potential for additional hours available.
Mandatory training dates are June 15 - June 19 and camp dates are June 22 – August 19 with a break from July 6 – July 10.
Camp staff must be available for these dates! **Exceptions will be made for pre-service and in-service educators**
Primary Responsibilities:
- Engaging children in the daily camp activities including animal interactions, farm activities, garden harvesting, and more while maintaining a safe environment
- Serve as a role model and maintain a positive, outgoing attitude throughout the camp days
- Encourage campers to try new activities and gain new skills and provide support and guidance while doing so
- Communicate effectively with campers, co-workers, and camp coordinator to maintain a positive camp experience for all
What are we looking for?
- Current college students and/or college graduates
- Background in Animal Science, Agricultural Science, Education, Veterinary Science is preferred
- Experience working with children, especially preschool-K age children
- Demonstrated leadership experience
- Able to be physically active and on your feet for the 5-hour workday in various weather conditions
- A positive can-do attitude and enthusiasm for the program and camp philosophy
- Strong interest in leading agriculture and nature-based activities
- Preferred prior knowledge and understanding of food allergies
- Prior knowledge of agriculture and sustainable farming, animal handling, or project-based learning is preferred
