Overview:
The Bowers School Farm, operated by Bloomfield Hills Schools, is a working farm that provides authentic, place-based learning experiences for schools and community groups. It is housed on 90 acres within Bloomfield Hills. The farm is open year-round for educational and community programs. The Bowers School Farm Camp provides children, ages 3 to 14, an opportunity to explore science and agriculture while creating lasting memories and friendships.

Position Summary:
As a Farm Camp Group Leader, you will be responsible for leading a group of approximately 13 campers through the daily farm activities. These activities include daily animal chores such as milking the goats and engaging campers in STEM projects to explore the world of agriculture, food systems, and the natural environment. Farm Camp Group Leaders must be physically able to work outdoors in various weather conditions and be excited to work with children within an outdoor learning environment.

Duties & Responsibilities: 

Camp dates and Schedule:
Monday – Friday 8:30 am – 4:30 pm with optional extended day hours available.
Mandatory training dates are June 8 - June 19 and camp dates are June 22 – August 21 with a break from July 6 – July 10.
Camp staff must be available for these dates! **Exceptions will be made for pre-service and in-service educators.**

Primary Responsibilities:
- Engaging children in the daily camp activities including animal handling, project-based STEM activities, garden harvesting, and more while maintaining a safe environment
- Serve as a role model and maintain a positive, outgoing attitude throughout the camp days
- Encourage campers to try new activities and gain new skills and provide support and guidance while doing so
- Communicate effectively with campers, co-workers, and camp coordinator to maintain a smooth camp experience for all
- Utilize time management and prioritizing skills to maintain a structured schedule for campers

Education & Experience: 

What are we looking for?
- Current college students and/or college graduates; background in animal or agricultural science, education, veterinary science
- Experience working with children, especially K-6th grade children
- Demonstrated leadership experience
- Able to be physically active and on your feet for most of an 8-hour workday in various weather conditions
- A positive can-do attitude and enthusiasm for the program and camp philosophy
- Strong interest in leading agriculture, nature, and science-based activities
- Preferred prior knowledge and understanding of food allergies
- Prior knowledge of agriculture and sustainable farming, animal handling, or project-based learning is preferred
