About Row 7 Seed Company: Founded by Chef Dan Barber, organic vegetable breeder Michael Mazourek and seedsman Matthew Goldfarb, Row 7 Seed Company is an organic seed company built to reimagine food from the ground up. Row 7 pairs chefs, plant breeders and farmers in the development of new varieties of vegetables and grains that make an impact in the soil and at the table.
Crop production
- Design and plan field map with consideration for best management practices (rotation, etc.), research plot design and ease of data collection.
- Oversee all vegetable production. Production is year-round and includes heated greenhouse space, a hoop house and the field.
- Conduct daily field and greenhouse operations — seeding, transplanting, field maintenance, pest/disease management, harvesting, etc.
- Develop and maintain nutrient management system with consideration for organic and regenerative practices.
- Develop and monitor irrigation systems, including creating and implementing a watering schedule for the greenhouse, hoop house and production fields.
- Coordinate basic plumbing, electrical and construction work as needed.
- Manage crop timeline, including planting, transplanting and harvest dates.
- Plan and oversee a grow-out of current Row 7 varieties for quality control, continued data collection and guest visits.
- Coordinate and supervise additional farm labor as needed.
Trials / Breeding
- Maintain up-to-date, detailed crop records and compile into database based on established criteria.
- Support breeding activities, including pollination, data collection and seed extraction.
- Coordinate the harvest and transportation of experimental produce to Row 7 and its Trial Community for evaluation. Individual trial lines must be kept separate and clearly labeled.
- Assist with other seed- and breeding-related activities, as needed.
Communications and Outreach
- Regularly communicate with Row 7 team to share scheduled farm activities, incoming harvests, and crop / data collection updates.
- Support the development of technical growing resources.
- Make regular visits to Row 7 headquarters in Tarrytown, NY.
- Assist in coordinating Chef / Partner visits to the trial garden. Provide tours to visitors as needed.
- Represent Row 7 at outside events (conferences, meetings, etc).
BS degree or equivalent and 3-5 years previous field and greenhouse experience, ideally with experience in management position
Research/trials experience and working knowledge of basic plant breeding
A strong understanding of organic agriculture, crop rotation, soil enhancement and general ecological principles
Farm record keeping and use of spreadsheet applications, including Microsoft Office and Google Drive
