Small and medium-sized farms can earn extra income with value-added products made legally and safely at home and on the farm. From salsa to jam, bread, and dried fruit, farmers can turn imperfect produce into marketing diversity. Options include starting with home kitchens, adding a commercial kitchen to a farm building, working with community kitchen spaces, and hiring a co-packer. We will learn from some growers who have successful value-added businesses and from a certifier about what it takes to get these products certified. Topics may include product niches, branding, packaging, and the legalities of various products.
