Why Birds Matter in Agricultural Landscapes

This workshop will focus on the ecological roles that birds fill, and the ways they benefit farms, vineyards and orchards. We will cover economic, ecological and aesthetic benefits of attracting birds to a variety of agricultural settings, with emphasis on organic farms. Birds matter because they link many different parts of the ecosystem: they consume pests, cycle nutrients, disperse plants, and serve as environmental indicators. Farmers increasingly recognize the economic benefits of biodiversity in agricultural landscapes. The concept of ecosystem services – ecological processes that benefit humans – provides a useful framework for understanding links between biodiversity and agricultural production. Filling the air with song, birds do matter!
