Women increasingly are becoming primary decision makers on farms. Nearly 1 million women are farm operators and over a half-million own and lease land to farmers. Because agricultural land was traditionally controlled by men, women had less opportunity to become landowners. But things are changing. One-third of US farmland is farmed or co-farmed by women, and women own 87 million acres. While data show that women possess a strong conservation and stewardship ethic, they are under-represented in conservation programs and have limited access to resources about land management for long-term sustainability. This workshop explores American Farmland Trust’s Women for the Land initiative, which combines research, conservation learning circles, and policy work for succession planning, building landowner-farmer relationships, and whole-farm conservation strategies.
