Organic Weed Control in Vegetable Systems

Controlling weeds is extremely important in vegetable production at all scales. In this session, the full diversity of weed control practices and equipment will be covered—from judicious cover crops that break weed cycles, to cultivation equipment, flaming, and organic materials that may be effective in a variety of vegetable cropping systems. We will also hear about research on a practice called occultation, which involves tarping fields with black plastic for short periods of time to influence weed pressure, as well as yield and labor inputs. A researcher and a grower from the 2019 research season will discuss their results.
