Meet two award-winning nonprofits that offer youth excellent opportunities for growth while developing valuable hands-on skills in food and farming. "Food, What?!" is a youth- empowerment and food justice organization that uses sustainable agriculture and health education to grow healthy and resilient teens. Low-income and struggling youth in Santa Cruz County participate in internships, summer job training, peer-to-peer education, and community events on the FoodWhat farm. At the Teen Kitchen Project, teens gain skills in cooking as they learn about community service and the impact of their food choices. They prepare delicious, healthy meals that are delivered free to community members dealing with serious illness. TKP operates out of commercial kitchens in Soquel and Watsonville and sources ingredients from local organic farms.
