Since Trump’s election, USDA’s National Organic Program (NOP) has double downed efforts to weaken the organic standards. First, it officially allowed soil-less farming to be certified as organic and then it discarded basic animal welfare standards. Wanting to take back control of organic, a group of organic farmers and allies formed the Real Organic Project (ROP). They are developing a label to add on to the NOP’s organic seal, backed by a certification system. ROP- certified farmers are taking a public stand about how soil-enhancing land stewardship and pastured livestock are fundamental to organic production. The new label is intended to be a transparent way to communicate organic farming practices to consumers. Learn how you can benefit from supporting the ROP and participate in its certification program.
