School Gardens: Inoculating Young Hearts and Minds with a Passion for Farming

Learn from programs that are successfully engaging kids with their food! Over the past 18 years the North Fork School Garden, run by Kern Family Farm, has grown into a farm of nearly an acre. More than 250 K-8 grade students work in the garden every week, providing fresh produce for the cafeteria. The Kerns will share what this has meant for their farm, their store and their community. Sierra Harvest works in Nevada County, educating, inspiring and connecting kids in 32 schools to fresh, local, seasonal foods. Their farm-to-school program includes farm field trips, Harvest-of-the-Month tastings, produce carts, and guest chef and farmer visits. More than 2,500 children a year visit the 2/3 acre educational farm for field trips, summer camps and U-Picks.
