Coupling soil nitrogen supply with plant demand is challenging in organic systems. In this discussion we will build a nitrogen plan that includes cover crops, organic matter, nitrogen fertilizers, compost, liquid amendments and crop residue, using heirloom tomatoes as a model crop. We will discuss how to determine when and in what quantities the crop needs nitrogen, and how to predict nitrogen release from different sources. Dr. Margaret Lloyd is the UCCE Small Farms Advisor for Yolo, Solano and Sacramento Counties and Patricia Lazicki is an Assistant Specialist at the UC Davis Department of Land, Air and Water resources.
