Saving Farmland, Saving the Climate

California has launched a trail-blazing program to invest in farmland conservation as a climate protection strategy that limits greenhouse gas emissions from urban sprawl. Using money from California's cap-and-trade program, the state distributed $5 million in grants in 2015 for permanent farmland easements and the funds will increase in 2016. We will hear from two land-conservation professionals who will discuss the importance of this funding source in the wake of the defunct Williamson Act, and the implications and practical considerations of this new program for slowing the loss of California’s valuable farmland.
