Maximizing Value from Excess Harvest to Benefit Communities

Almost half of all food produced in the U.S. is wasted, lost at all stages of production from field to store to refrigerator. This is a tragic loss of nutrition, labor, water, energy, and revenue. Innovative solutions are emerging, though. For example, Imperfect Produce is creating a market for the six billion pounds of “ugly” produce that gets thrown away each year because it is imperfect.  Food Shift is changing the paradigm of food recovery from a charity to a service by working toward a paid food recovery sector and by launching a kitchen to provide jobs in the processing of surplus food.
