Evaluating Sustainability of Organic Farming Practices in California

Funded by the USDA-OREI program, scientists have been conducting a research project to evaluate the sustainability of organic farming practices on California’s Central Coast. Diverse strawberry/vegetable crop rotation trials were established at seven commercial organic farms in 2011. Since then the trials have monitored crop yields, diseases, soil nitrogen dynamics, carbon sequestration, greenhouse gas emissions, economics of production, and carbon footprints. Methods to improve arthropod pest management in organic strawberries and vegetables have also been studied. The speakers will present the project overview and outcomes from carbon sequestration and bio-control in organic broccoli and strawberry studies.
